Keystone Hospice announces the release of its 2009 calendar, titled “Healing Through Art,” which features patient stories and showcases the hospice’s pioneering creative arts therapies program.

Highlighting an array of therapeutic mediums, each month’s spread features patient artwork, and photo essays, as well as narratives by patients and their families who have experienced the benefits of Keystone’s creative arts therapies.

Creative arts therapies yield many benefits improving quality of life and well-being. Through participation in these modalities, patients find comfort, aesthetic enjoyment, ease depression, and engage in life review and legacy creation. Arts interventions address emotional, spiritual and physical well-being, helping patients access inner strengths, identify coping tools, decrease feelings of isolation and relieve pain.

The calendar also highlights a songwriting project, an element of music therapy, which is at the core of Keystone’s program. In fact, Keystone is one of the region’s only hospices to have a full-time music therapist on staff. Beneficial to patients throughout the disease process, music has shown to have a profound impact on both the mind and body. What’s more, music therapy interventions can be used in conjunction with, or even instead of, medicine to manage pain and other symptoms.

“Our calendar and website are unique educational tools that explain what creative arts therapies are, and how when incorporated into a hospice care plan offer invaluable support to patients and their families,” said Laura Thomae, MT-BC, director of Keystone’s creative arts and complementary therapies program. “Music, art and dance/movement therapies offer tremendous benefits to improving quality of life at end of life.”

Audio and video files of patient-recorded songs and narrative stories, photo essays and educational materials are featured online. Click here to view.
