"Office Angel" Margaret Henderson

Written by Keystone Hospice Volunteer Marilyn Steeg

After her husband passed away in 1998, Margaret Henderson was introduced to Keystone House, which she and her sister Josephine had been invited to visit. “They had just opened and only had about four patients – but I was very impressed with the house.” Another sister, Delphine, who had been associated with Executive Director Gail Inderwies for several years, suggested she consider volunteering here.

“The staff’s warmth and dedication made me decide to volunteer, and after given several options of duties, I chose clerical work – the updating of patient files as well as helping with mailings for the Bereavement Director. I have been coming here every Thursday for the past seven years to do whatever needs to be done,” she added.

Margaret has lived in her own home in Jenkintown since 1962. Her late husband Floyd was a 40-year postal employee, and she worked for the Department of Public Welfare at Broad & Spring Garden streets. She retired after 30 years of service. Margaret has five children who live in Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, and Jenkintown, as well as 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One daughter is a nurse, and a granddaughter has graduated from Howard University’s School of Nursing.

She is especially proud of being a life-time member of the First Baptist Church of Huntington Valley, a small church of 200 members, where she serves as a Deaconess. Her volunteer work there includes membership on six important committees, including Sage Age and Feeding the Homeless. For the homeless projects, Margaret specializes in cooking (“I’m the string bean person”) and helping to put the kitchen back in order. For the church’s Sage Age group – people 70 and older – one of her favorite endeavors is miming and signing a 25-minute program with 3 others for various audiences. “We sign ‘we are climbing Jacob’s Ladder’ and other pieces, and we would love to perform here one day.

Every Thanksgiving, the First Baptist Church contributes to Keystone’s efforts to provide meals for hospice patients in need. Last year, the Church provided over 20 food baskets containing entire meals – canned goods, turkey, desserts – for Keystone to distribute.

Margaret concluded: “I praise God for allowing me to do these things and I praise him for being in my life.”

We greatly value the independent and capable way in which Margaret performs whatever administrative needs are needed. Her gentle and unassuming manner help promote a caring and compassionate environment, and we feel refreshed and blessed by her presence.
