Keystone Kids Camp |
|
Each summer, Keystone Hospice hosts a bereavement camp for children ages 6 to 13 who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The children have the opportunity to have fun in a camp setting, while spending time with other children who have sustained similar losses, allowing them to explore their grief in a supportive and engaging environment. The 2-day camp includes fun activities that promote connection making and emotional expression integrated with therapeutic arts activities that provide meaningful ways for kids to address their feelings. Under the direction of hospice chaplain Rev. Helen Burke, the children help to create and participate in a special memorial service at the end of camp. Parents, caregivers and other important family and friends are invited to attend. The children write a song together which they present at the memorial service. The song is recorded and each child receives a CD with the song to take home. They engage in movement exercises, like using a parachute as a tool to explore and express emotions in a safe way. The children also decorate kites with messages for their deceased loved ones. They send the messages aloft by flying the kites. These activities provide healthy closure to grieving children.
