Our History
Keystone Hospice opened for service to provide home hospice care in January 1995 in Fort Washington, PA. It started as a stand-alone hospice certified by Medicare and Medicaid. Keystone was the first hospice in Southeastern Pennsylvania to provide pediatric hospice services.

In December 1996, Philadelphia Health Commissioner Estelle Richman asked Keystone to establish a residential facility to help fill the void left by the closing of BETAK, an AIDS hospice. In 1997, Keystone established Keystone House, the only freestanding residential hospice in southeastern Pennsylvania. Keystone House accommodates not only AIDS patients but also those with any terminal illness. After several months of extensive renovation, Keystone began to accept patients in April 1998.

Keystone Hospice continues to serve a diverse constituency throughout the greater Philadelphia region, with particular regard for the medically underserved and disenfranchised. Keystone’s goals include serving increased numbers of patients and families in their own homes, as well as at Keystone House.

In commemoration of Keystone's 2007 10th Anniversary, “The Living Legacy of A Home With Heart” written by local author Paula Riley, was compiled and published. This loving tribute traces the history of Keystone House over the past two centuries. Click here to request your copy or view on-line by clicking on cover. (Adobe Acrobat Reader required.)
